Is the ds18b20 probe waterproof?

Hi, I wanted to know if it is possible to immerse the ds18b20 probe completely in water for a long period. Has anyone ever tried? Thank you

Post a link to what you mean.

A ds18b20 is a chip in a plastic package. Water will corrode it's exposed metal pins.

Some ds18b20 come sealed inside a long stainless steel tube, with insulated wires coming out of one end. This end is supposed to be sealed but I think eventually water will leak in that end and corrode the wires. I suggest keeping that end out of the water.

  • Seems like water always goes where we don’t want it.

  • Water can penetrate wire insulation.

  • Have had quite good luck making my own assemblies.
Used silicone insulated wires, use a spent brass bullet cartridge filled with silicone glue.

  • Ideally, both the sensor and wire should be encapsulated in something like a water impervious tube.

Yes, I'm one of the very few who have actually done it with the stainless tube versions. It is still not a great idea, and I bet you're struggling to find good reason to do it. There is a swag of more sensible installations - none of which involve getting the cables wet.

That’s a tough question to answer without knowing the specific environment it's in. I’ve used one in my fish tank for several years with no problems, but others have experienced failures. The depth of the water will significantly impact how well it holds up. If response speed isn’t critical, you can encase it in heat shrink with thermal glue for better protection. The best solution, however, would be to place it in a thermal well.
