Looking for a handy IC reference list

So the Arduino has gotten me back into some electronics, now that I've found something that bridges my programming with my well rusted electronics "skills". Looking in the parts boxes, I can tell that my 40xx series chips are too old (they were on their way out a long time ago)

I've seen some references to some different and very usefull 74 series chips for serial-paralell, pwm bus lines, led drivers etc. Is there any single list of some of these different chips, preferably ones more suited to Arduino. Reading datasheets is fun and all, but I dont know what I dont know.

There is a list of pretty basically explained (by application) logic ICs and other ICs used in 'simple' electronics.

Thank you for that link BetaDelta

It's OK! I found whilst learning about electronics back in the GCSE Systems and Control days (only three years ago).

It has some silliness on it, but, also some diamonds!

BetaDelta: Great link. Much improved over the TI chip matrix I've been using for the purpose.

This is also another option for a quick overview: List of 7400-series integrated circuits - Wikipedia
