Lost parts of forum

I seem to have lost direct access to many of the sub groups on the forum and can no longer “ find” electronics, programming etc from my iPhone .
I only have this view. When going to community form the Arduino web site

Hi @hammy. You can get to it from the sidebar. Click the icon here to open the sidebar:

Then select the top level category from the list there, then the subcategory you want.

For example, if you want to get to the General Electronics category:

  1. Click on the sidebar icon.
    The sidebar will open.
  2. Select Other Hardware from the list of top level categories in the "Categories" section of the sidebar.
The Other Hardware category page will open.
  3. Select General Electronics from the Other Hardware category page.

Thanks ! That does work .
Has something changed in the forum layout ?

The "New and Improvers" never rest.

There hasn't been any intentional change to the layout. The Discourse forum framework we use is autonomously managed by the Discourse, and the updates to the framework do sometimes result in changes to the forum layout. So it is possible that is the cause.

A more likely cause is the recent restructuring of the forum categories (see: Updated web site 👍). This restructuring has solely been a matter of renaming, removing, adding, and moving categories. It has not involved any changes to the layout settings. However, the layout of the categories list does automatically adjust according to the structure of the categories.

The category lists that are now inaccessible on devices with a small display look like this when the forum is viewed on a display with sufficient dimensions:

Note that it is formatted as a vertical list.

However, some other category lists have this format:

Note that it is formatted as a horizontal, line wrapped list.

Some of the category lists which are now in a vertical list format were previously in the horizontal format:

I don't know what criteria determines which format should be used. There isn't a setting for this.

In general, I greatly prefer the vertical format as I find the horizontal format difficult to read and messy looking. But of course an ugly layout that is mobile friendly would be better than a clean layout that is hostile to users of mobile devices.

Indeed... And I just wish they bloody would. They clearly never actually use the forum on a phone.

Thanks for that info -thought it was me !!

I don't own an iPad, but I can reproduce the problem on my phone. I never use the forum from my phone so I don't have any idea of how functional it was on that platform previously.

Do you remember when was the last time you used the forum when it did not have this issue? The time frame might help to identify the possible causes.

It looks normal on my Samsung A31.

If you use a phone, have you enabled the "Desktop site" by accident or on purpose.

I think that I have observed minor changes a while ago with placement of buttons on when using the "normal view" on my phone. This was before the restructuring.

Thanks for checking. If you scroll down until you can see the "Other Hardware" category on the categories page, do you see the list of subcategories as expected?

I ask because I can see the list of subcategories under "Development Tools" on my phone. It is different from your screenshot in that the list has the vertical format instead of the horizontal format shown in your screenshot, but the list is below the (annoyingly large) category image and so it is fully visible.

But the list of subcategories of "Other Hardware" are to the right of the category image, and so are horizontally truncated:

No, I have that option disabled when I encounter the problem.

It might well be that I am misusing the forum in some other manner though. Although I am quite tech savvy in general, I haven't found much need to use a phone for anything other than phone calls and text messages in my life (and generally find it quite annoying when I do need to use the other capabilities, so avoid it as much as possible) so I am very clueless when it comes to mobile devices.

Well, that's the operative bit. Before, a little scrolling was needed to skip over some unnecessary junk. Years ago, you didn't need to even do that. Now, you have to scroll for yards to get to "other hardware" for christssake. Who was the idiot who decided to inflict THAT on everybody, and why? And, to add insult to injury, there was no prior warning of this ridiculous exercise, and I first thought something was wrong with the phone.
Fortunately, my desktop has individual bookmarks for the handful of subjects I'm interested in and was therefore proofed against this silly dabbling.

All categories look normal to me.

No, it isn't. It's different from what it was. For starters, Sensors was in a different group, straight above Networking. If you think that's normal, it may be because you don't bother with the Sensors section - or Networking either.
I could go on, but what's the point...

@Nick_Pyner

This topic is not about the restructuring of the forum where categories have been moved, replaced, merged etc; this topic is about sub categories that seem to have disappeared (on a cell phone) or can't be accessed. Compare the following screen shots.

post #1 vs post #10 vs post #12

Is exactly what I'm talking about, as clearly mentioned in post #1, and the answer was in post #4 AND the "most likely cause" in post #5. The stuff IS still there, there is no problem when using the desktop, but I came to same conclusion as the OP.
