Magnetic Sensor Question

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question. I'm wondering if it is possible to detect a magnet above 3 inches of water? Lets say the sensor is placed beneath a cup of water and I drop a ball painted with magnetic paint into the cup. Would the sensor detect the presence of the magnet/ball?

Thanks a lot!

Yes. For example HMC5883L will detect that..

Most likely not as the magnetic paint would most likely not be 'strong enough' to be detectable at such distances. However one can buy real magnetic balls of a magnetic strength that would be detectable over such distances.

My original thought was that the paint may not provide a strong enough response from the sensor. I'm really stumped on how to detect the ball in the cup without modifying the cup at all. Weight sensors, I would assume, would not be able to differentiate between a 2g ball and fluctuations in water movement, etc

The water won't make any difference. If you can detect the magnet a given distance in air, you can detect it through that much water. The cup won't matter either, unless it is made of a magnetic metal.
