Hi guys. I'm thinking about a car counting system in the entry and exit of an enclosed parking lot. But I need a comparatively cheap sensor to work with (preferably under 30 AUD). Can you guys suggest me any sensors? I just need the sensors to sense the four wheeled vehicles instead of every other thing entering or exiting the parking lot, like humans or animals or bikes.
A magnetometer, like this one, can easily detect a 4 wheel vehicle several meters distant, as the iron-containing materials distort the Earth's magnetic field.
Thank you for the info. Just one question, so will it detect any metal that disrupts the magnetic field? Because I don't want it to detect bikes. They too has their engine block made of iron. Does that mean I need to calibrate the micro controller to detect high disruptions from a large amount of metal presence? (Btw I'm quite new to electronics. Sorry if I appear noob, because I am )

Yes, trial and error is required. I use this method to detect automobiles at our driveway entrance.
