Do what you like.
I'm just warning @hbachetti about the dangers of connecting voltages higher than 3.3V to an ESP pin.
In general it's not a good idea to apply voltages to any microprocessor I/O that are greater than the operating voltage.
Why not just do thing the right way and follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
