Mosquito control: A simple optical method, a game changer

Innovations from users.

Unexpected results gave out an innovation A light itself is a trap.

I got the idea from a user. She had to clean the housings of her recessed mosquito repelling lights of hundreds every week. They were jus mainly mosquitoes with some others as well She just had her lights several centimeters into the opening of a tube (or box).

Front of tube.png

The principle is right.

  • When one reserve a place for them to go they will go indeed.
  • The inner side of thee tube should be Blue . . . or RED.. --
  • It takes several days for them to get killed- Until then they will come out with an OFF of the power.

I thought you would find this interesting

I like to report to the community 1 agricultural application/observation with the light on my backyard where I have about 1000 square feet, high above trellis.
As a Vietnamese we love lufa soup and in Texas the plants were plagued with lovebugs. They came depositing eggs, making the fruits spoiled as the results.
There, the lights were installed mostly below the trellis for mosquito repelling purposes. Last several years they puzzled me about the locations, the bugs only come to spoil in certain areas while leaving the rest intact plus 1 interesting observation. they did not come near to bother us at human activity level; below 5', 6'
I have 1 light installed higher this year, and I can't wait to have the result reported.

The spring is right around the corner, In order to facilitate your work, I share you my experience.
Years back, when we deployed the "mosquito repelling lights" it was in our wish list that there was USB LED strip on the market. such as:

Things have changed for you benefit, though they are about 2m long. you only need a very small portion of it.
Please put yourselves at the eye of the insects, they try to avoid seeing it (them), put them in the situation, fleeing from one will lead them into the direction to come to the other.. It is better when the strip is cut up 2,3,4 LED per sections to be put at different corner of the place rather then a single one.

BTW: They don't need to be synchronized. - If you need me to re-post the code then drop us a line.

Dear Community.
For the benefit of all, If You can help us all to post on "WKI . . " with the Journal reference . When I post the link. They say I "promote myself". If a peer review journal is not a reliable source then what else?

Something For FUN!
A mosquito repelling phone dongle.
Years back i got 1 challenge to make a mosquito repel phone dongle. And it worked, work ell.
Sorry it was too long ago that I don't have the picture.

These are the instruction: It has 2 parts.

  • The hardware: A 3.5mm stereo plug, 2 RGB LED. and a 20 ohm resistor I prefer the petty tiny but my eye sight limits me to use the 5050 . The schematic is below.
  • You need to create a wave file perhaps using Audacity or others. The forum does not allow to upload wave file so I have the screen capture instead.
  • As long as the the wave file is played it repels.

Donge.png

Please remember it repels on line of sight principle:

NOTE: My children didn't like it b/c it tied up their phones and they always had others laying around.

Revisiting the Trap.
Now is spring, and summer next. If you do for your home then trap (in page 1) is my recommendation.
The following image show the test was setup. Please note that the middle round circle was taped. There is only one way the to move from 1 side to the other is thru the trap. It is as the same described trap without the mesh In order demonstrate the catching in action.

The setup (Somehow "insert an image" does not work - I put a link).)

And the slow-motion picture show what actually happen. - It was capture too long ago, I forget exact how long the actual run time was, i guest it's about 45' or 1 hr. The mosquitoes were introduced to the bottom haft. The light repelled them with a reserved 'safe" path is the mouth of the trap where the fan sucked and threw them to the "top" corner. The video picture were captured for in-house evaluation, not for show. I dig for other images and found them in the zip file.

The trap at the patio overnight.

There are signs that some were consumed by others. Body parts were laying around. We checked at night and saw many; they got in/out by crawling.

These are the insects who came to "eat' the mosquitoes in the traps and disappeared before dawn. They were about dozen or so when I put the trap under a shed.

My journey to have my entire place Mosquito Free.

As I said in the first post, it's "difficult to use:

  • If you are in an open area like in the park, it's easy, just put 4 in 4 far corners. They have plenty of "room" to go away. Remember, they are ambushing you right outside the perimeters, you will get bitten right upon going there.
  • Few years back ,I had a large backyard in the mosquito "infested" region surrounded by a lot of large trees and a free running dog named Rain, When I tested the technology with a 10' high mosquito repelling light bulb at one part of the yard. I frequently got bitten whenever the dog came near to about 2, 3'. I theorized that somehow the mosquito hitchhiked underneath her belly to come to attack me. After I limited the area preventing the dog from going to the untreated places, the phenomena ceased.
  • I later found out, regardless how good I tried on the outsides the hitchhiking phenomena did happen on humans, on our clothes. Once they got inside it's nearly impossible to "show" them the doors to go out or to chase them out. On average 1 female will get her meal about 3 to 4 times. Out of necessity I'd made the trap, put them in the bedrooms and they worked since then.
  • For about 3 years I enjoyed my kitchen cockroach free, recently I saw 2, After some "investigations" I was my wife during her cleaning thing up, she turned 1 light pointing it toward the wall instead of the middle, I repositioned and it turned to "normal" again.
  • For the purpose of setting observations, my backyard was haft treated, haft untreated, with a free running dog, I can collect "to kill" about 1000 larvae a week. It was troublesome to have a dog to comply with the deed restrictions, We gave her away since then we will get some here and there despite we did set up standing water bodies.
  • My neighbor complained to the mosquito control agency, they paid me a visit, instead of receiving any complaints or citations . . . I received compliments.
  • Only up to this year I achieved my shed mosquito free status. I have a 25' x 32's shed that is surrounded by large hundred foot height trees and small trees and gardens. It is my everything workshop, woodwork, metalwork and laboratory, packed with heavy equipment and furniture As the result of a lot of hiding places I still got bitten, I tried hard with combinations of traps and lights . . .only to get with successes only on the upper part of the body, they came out from under the tools hiding places . I reasoned: Like the ultrasonic pest repeller they said of large effective areas, but we need extra(s) and extra(s) to achieve the purpose. Applying the same method I finally get my shed mosquito free. (I may get once every few days? Not sure!) Not for "just enough" but extra(s), extra(s).
  • To show you how bad the area is: Lately 1 of my neighbor complained to the court that I raise mosquitoes in my backyard. I was my good will to leave a part of my backyard untreated and have 1 light pointing to people's pathway. I notice his reactions whenever he comes outside for yard works waving, fanning hands in front of ones' face.
I take things for grant, until a few weeks ago when I came to my neighbors talking about the branches their tree scratching the top of our car & truck, I got bitten left and right.

I CAN DO IT SO CAN YOU!

Living Quarter As Mosquito Free Island.

Things to be considered when one wants to have his/her house become a mosquito free island.

  • It's fairly easy to set the lights crisscrossing to cover the yards. It's not enough.

  • When we said of islands we tend to think as if they are on a 2-D map. Perhaps the most challenging and overlooked highways for them to come into the house are from the roof down. Once they get under the soffit, (assuming that you have some light on the wall) they don't know how to get out. 1 solution is to have the high lights on the yards as we are doing it right now, the other is to have 360 degree light(s) on the roof.

  • If the soffits are large like a hallway and have lights on the ceiling. They tend to fly along the ceiling. One thing we learned is that if we have the recessed light they will flock there, I mean a lot, , , , a lot. (One setting in Piedmont OK, they have to clean them every week?).

Further posts I will have some exercising cases to help further along - Please Pray.

I can do it --> So can you.

Hi,
How much in electrical power is this using?

Tom.... :grinning: :+1: :coffee: :australia:

1 6 LED unit consumes less than 70mA; 0.070 * 5v =0.35W.

1 finger size 18650 battery last for 4-1/2 days mean 4 x 24hrs - (Please use the brand name some others, even on links from Walmart & Amazon lasted about 4hrs).

Hope this helps.

I have quite few thousands of the above Mosquito Repelling Lights in form of Populated PCB(s) & USB cable. They are ready to use, requiring them to be soldered together. They are the same ones I use around my house.

And I am looking for a avenue to offer to the community- Free of charge.

Obviously I am incapable to do one member at a time. Volunteers?.

Any Suggestions?

I’m lucky, mosquitoes don’t seem to like me (nor do a lot of other living creatures).

Something rare. A giant, fish-size larva - with normal ones.

Perhaps this is the only image of a giant mosquito larva captured. It took about a month for it to come this size. I have seen one with about twice bigger about 3cm in length and I thought I was a fish. Enjoy!
