My Compaq Computer crashed and demolished :(

Hi falks,

I need your help. My Computer has been demolished because of my work with arduino and a 48V Power supply.

I was coding via Arduino. What did I make wrong ? Here is the shematic I used.

The connections I crossed off in red should not be there.
However, unless the DM542, 48V supply or computer is faulty it would not have destroyed your computer.

Thanks man  I also suspected these two connection. The EN- Pin on the driver should only be connected to the IC (Arduino).

But as I said, that probably did not cause your computer to be destroyed

I watched on my mainboard. Many many capacitors were blown out... see here:

You either had somethig else connected wrong or the power supply and/or motor driver is faulty,

A sad tale and a useful warning for others. Thanks for sharing.

Oh my ... that's how you learn it the hard way. Well, I remember that I connected a floppy disks power supply wrong by shifting it one pin ... gave a nice smoking surprise when powered on

@6v6gt
The harddrive thankfully wasn't damaged. I made 2 backups for my HD. My Computer is a very very old dude  so it is okay that it died.

@jim-p I am pretty sure, that is was because of the power supply. Each time I startet the supply (at the same time the UNO was connected to COmputer), my Computer alerted me of a wrong USB Device. I think it's because of power backdrop or etc.

@zwieblum sometimes learning the hard way is better, because you won't do the same mistake ever again

@jim-p Eather the power supply made a back-drop of current, or the motor Driver (DM542) made a backdrop of current. Maybe the MOTOR ? It is a huge 48V 4,2A Motor.

I would buy a new good quality power supply.
You may also consider using a USB isolator module.

I guees that this was the problem. It was one of the cheapest

What is an USB Isolator ? Is this a correct one ?

That or something similar. Again you get what you pay for. I see those modules ranging from $1 to $35. I have personally never used one.

Okay, propably I'm gonna buy one from Amazon with 5 Starts etc. (although I personally do not trust 5 stars on Amazon, because many people give blindly 5 stars because they don't have no clue of what 'good quality' means)..

Were you usine a genuine Uno or a clone?

wait, I know why my old computer has blown up... i will show it to you in a few minutes.. You will be suprised  I will give you a hint right now: as soon as I turn the supply ON, I feel very bad myself, as if there is a huge magnetic field arround me  wait for the video...

Probably not. You have a faulty supply where the line voltage is connected to one of the outputs or to the outside metal. Buy a new one
