I just got this board. Trying to get the pc to recognize it, I've searched the internet for answers and installed drivers, purchased a cable that says it can transmit data (Well at least it says so). Still doesn't show up in the device manager. What can I do?
Anything in device manager with yellow triangles?
Which ones?
What is written on the chip next to the USB connector?
If unreadable and if it shows in Windows device manager with a yellow triangle somewhere, you will probably be able to find the VID and the PID (right click, properties, tab details, dropdown hardware ids) and look it up on e.g. All USB Vendors | Device Hunt to find the exact TTL-to-USB converter that is used. Based on that you can install the correct driver.
It does not show up in the device manager with a yellow triangle or anything at all. And the writing on the chip is practically erased. But it says CH something on the photo of the place I bought it from. Also writes on the back of the board "Install CH340G driver" which I did.
Also this driver
CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Drivers - Silicon Labs
is there anything else written on the underside of the PCB?
try a different USB cable?
have you entered under File>Preferences http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json and then under Tools>Board Manager installed ESP8266 by ESP8266 Community
Just this. I used 5 different cables lying around then I bought a cable advertised to be data transmitting. Maybe that's fake? I'll buy another from another place if I can't find a solution.
And I did that json thing too.
If Windows does not react at all, you have
- a faulty cable (OK, we can basically exclude that)
- bad soldering on the board
- a bad board
That is not relevant for board recognition. It however might install the correct drivers if you did the next step as well (boards manager).
It was the cable! Apparently, the cable I bought wasn't actually data transmitting although it said so.
