Old Uno r3 compatiblity

Newbie here. I bought a starter kit in 2015, never did much with it. I apparently got through a simple programming example, because the onboard LED driven off pin 13 is blinking. Problem is that PLC IDE will not connect to the board. Is this perhaps a compatibility issue due to the board being 10yrs old?
Also, when I click Files there are no examples as indicated by the instruction book and tutorials.

did you install the AVR boards package in Boards Manager?

I don't recall doing so, I must have missed that when I downloaded the software. I'll look into it. Thank you!

Isn't the PLC IDE meant for just the Portenta and Opta products?

Have you tried the standard IDE?

Oh. I must have downloaded the wrong platform. That explains why in New Project only Portenta and Opta products come up as options for target device. Thanks!

OK so, I now have the correct IDE software loaded, complete with the board manager. For Arduino Uno I see only R4, whereas my old board is an R3. Will this work, or is R3 no longer supported?

You need the "Arduino AVR Boards" board library. That should give you a wholel ist of AVR boards including plain old "Aruduino UNO".
