Outage

I was getting errors trying to access the site yesterday - a Cloudflare page showing that Arduino.cc was down. Looking at dates on post traffic it appears that it was down somewhere in the region of twelve hours.

Same here, couldn't get past the home page. Sent a message to webmaster@arduino.cc, was back up again by 7AM US eastern time (11:00Z) when I logged in.

Yep was down in Canada too
Also sent a msg via other means ;D

Came back up around 3.30 am EST. when the staff came into work somewhere in the world.

It's disappointing that the Arduino team has not posted a reason for this (and an apology if appropriate).

I had deliberately not started "this" Topic to give them the opportunity to do so.

I don't recall anything other than radio silence the last time this happened. I don't anticipate that this will be any different.

I assume that the web guys don't support the site out of hours, so any weekend outage in particular may continue until Monday morning in Italy (?).

I agree. But hope springs eternal

Even a post explaining that would be a comfort - letting us know that they know that we exist.

I don't know where things have moved (if they have moved at all) on the question of changing this Forum to use the Discourse forum software. If they are still thinking of that I wonder if it is an option to get the Discourse people to host and manage the system for a fee rather than simply acquiring the Discourse software and having the Arduino team manage it?

Hello everyone!

I'm Alessandro, and I oversee the community and the open source hardware and software products at Arduino. I joined Arduino quite recently and I really care about hearing from the community and increasing the liason between it and the Arduino team.

First off, we really apologize about the forum outage.

This forum is suffering a lot from software obsolescence: while it recently reached 1M users (!) it is still based on a very old piece of software, which is not maintained anymore and cannot be scaled horizontally, thus making it very hard to implement high availability strategies and requiring a lot of manual work from our technicians to keep it alive. Even our moderators struggle all the time with glitches that make their work harder.

We are now working on migrating it to a more modern software platform, with new features and a better user experience, while preserving everything (posts, URLs etc.). This will solve all the reliability problems because we will be able to manage it using the same procedures and tools that run all our high-traffic websites like the main website, the store, Create etc. But be aware that problems may arise again until this complex migration is done. We are investing money and hiring consultants just to manage this forum migration because it's a high priority for us.

Meanwhile, please be zen should you notice more (hopefully minor) disruptions!

Welcome Alessandro, and looking forward to the updated forum.

OK so that's three Bob's as moderators.
Was the name a requirement ? :grinning:

Yes, I believe so.

Like the old commercial says, "Oh, it's you Bob".

(Never drove a Nissan myself tho)

Thanks for taking your web site’s health seriously, your concern and attention to solving the forums problems is much appreciated.

Hope any new software will still have access to the old threads.

Nice new suit !

Great that someone is taking an interest in this.

Apart form the issue of reliability, I find the features of the forum generally OK.

However, the one feature that I would really like to see, that is present in many other forums, is a "Threads in which I have participated" view, sometimes called "subscriptions". It would be similar to the existing "Updated Topics" view but not reset when the topic has been looked at.

There may be some minor issues this morning.
Not all related BTW.

EDIT.
For anyone who did not see the full header on the entry page that should now be fixed.

For anyone using the COVID 19 yellow link on the main entry page there seems to be a new API in use for that so please make your it is enabled if you have any sort of ad blocker etc.

And for anyone getting a blank page or an "oops" type error when trying to log in please let us know in this thread too.

Clear your browsers cache etc. before re-try.

Thanks.

Bob.

This should have come from @alranel

Moderators have enough to do without this extra work.

...R

@ alranel. maybe he has moved on, like so many others :frowning:

I simply got the info as I found the bugs early this morning and went through them with the backroom right away.

There were only two of us involved with finding the source and fixing them so nobody else would have had the info we had.

Besides being a moderator I do on occasion also test (break things) for the backroom.
So well within my remit.
