Programming the Bootloader on a Custom Board

I have custom board that is quite simple. It has an atmega328p with an external crystal at 16Mhz. It is tied into the SPI bus such that it can be successfully programmed using an Arduino as ISP programmer. I can set the fuse bits using avrdude and can program it with the Arduino IDE 2.3 using Sketch -> Upload Using Programmer. The Uno has the Arduino ISP software running on it. In the IDE I have the Arduino Uno as the selected board.

So all seems to be working perfectly. My theory is that because I am using a standard atmega328p with the external oscillator and can successfully upload code and execute code normally, I should be able to burn the bootloader without changing any wiring or selecting a different board, etc.

Failed chip erase: uploading error: exit status 1

Hi @iitgrad. This problem can be caused by the Uno board you are using as the "Arduino as ISP" programmer being unexpectedly reset during the "Burn Bootloader" operation. This can be fixed by disabling the auto-reset circuit on the "Arduino as ISP" programmer board. To do that, connect a ~10 uF capacitor between the GND and RST pins on the "Arduino as ISP" programmer board and then try the "Burn Bootloader" operation again.

Hopefully it will work this time.

Make sure to remove the capacitor from the Uno board after you are done using it as an "Arduino as ISP" programmer, since the "auto-reset" circuit is used to activate the bootloader on that board when uploading new sketches.

Gotcha. Now I have to go find a 10uF capacitor. haha :slight_smile:

As usual with capacitors, I think there is a good bit of leeway on the exact value in this application. So if you don't have a 10 uF on hand, you can try anything around that ballpark and hope it will still do the trick.

Yep, unfortunately the biggest I have is from a kit of caps but the largest is 100nf so I'll have to wait for amazon until tomorrow. Fingers crossed :slight_smile:

OK, found some 1uF capacitors, tied 5 in parallel to get 5uF and it appears to work. Here is what I got. However, I'm wondering if there is something else I am missing to get the bootloader to work. I was thinking it would do the right thing just monitor UART0 but the Arduino IDE doesn't seem to be able to talk to it.

It appears to start the process but this is what I get repeatedly

Note that I have confirmed that I have rx and tx correct. I'm using an FTDI cable from my usb with just the four wires, vcc, gnd, rx and tx

Note that I have read on line that since I don't have a DTR coming from my ftdi cable and it doesn't tigger a reset with my hardware (maybe I should change that) i apparently can just be ready for the download to happen, click reset and then hit upload. I have tried this several times but without any success.

Congratulations! That is definitely a success at performing a "Burn Bootloader" operation.

I think this is the cause. On a standard Arduino board, there is an auto-reset circuit that causes the microcontroller to automatically reset when the upload process starts. That reset activates the bootloader.

The upload error you got can be caused by the bootloader not being activated while the upload process starts, which happens if the microcontroller is not reset.

You need to get the timing right. If you press the reset button too early, the bootloader will have already timed out by the time the upload starts. The tricky thing is that when you press the "Upload" button in Arduino IDE, it first compiles your sketch before starting the actual upload. So you need to wait until after the compilation finishes before pressing the reset button.

The way to get the timing right is to watch the black console window at the bottom of the Arduino IDE window. As soon as you see something like this:

Sketch uses 444 bytes (1%) of program storage space. Maximum is 30720 bytes.
Global variables use 9 bytes (0%) of dynamic memory, leaving 2039 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 2048 bytes.

press and release the reset button.

The upload should now finish successfully.

wow, thanks @ptillisch. I am wondering if it is possible to increase the wait time on the bootloader as my application does not need to immediately run. I'll give this all another try in the morning when I get back in the lab.

That's what I use on Nanos, works fine.

Only by modifying the source code and then building a new bootloader binary from the source code (using the makefile-based build system):

But I'm confident you'll find you don't need a longer wait time. I never have a problem getting the timing right for a manual reset.
