[SOLVED] Arduino UNO R3 doesn't get recognized on Windows XP

Hello everyone,

I just bought my first Arduino UNO R3 and tried to follow the instructions in order to install the drivers. However, when I connect the board to the PC (by means of an USB cable) it doesn't get recognized by Windows. The "ON" green LED is on and the "L" LED blinks. I also connected a resistor in series with an external LED to the GND and 5V pins of the Arduino and it worked properly. So the problem is only the communication between the board and the PC... the FIRST step in the installation guide:

"Plug in your arduino UNO and let it try and fail to install the device driver"

I tried all USB ports in two different PCs and I got the same result. No sound is emitted when I plug in the board and the device manager doesn't show a new device. I also tried to manually install the drivers in "Add New Hardware" (Control Panel), but it didn't work because the hardware is not been recognized.

I'm using Windows XP SP3, and the board is Arduino UNO R3

Thank you in advice for your help

Try a different USB cable.

Oh my... that solved the issue. I should really learn how does an USB cable work. Because it was sending power to the board, I thought it wasn't a problem with the cable. I replaced it and now windows detects the board.

Thank you very much for taking you time to read my post and help me.

I too am having the same problem!
The board and programs work fine on a desktop PC running Vista.
Also a laptop running windows 7.
Desktop PC running XP the drivers cannot be installed.
Have tried all suggestions to no avail.

Had no installation problems on either the Vista or Win 7 machines.
