I have written the code copied from the book and successfully uploaded it onto the arduino uno. I am assuming that the code was correct because the upload was successful. After this I built the circuit on the breadboard twice using the components from the arduino starter kit. I still cannot figure out why it still doesn't work.
Can anyone help me out please.

It might be that you made a typo in the code, since not all errors would necessarily prevent a clean compile and upload.
Could also be a faulty component, or perhaps you have one in back to front? I don't know the book so I'm guessing, but I'll bet there are LEDs and they obviously need to be the right way round. Maybe also a transistor mis-wired?
