Thanks koraks. The IR-LED is on a little board with it's own current limiting resistor, so this should not be the reason for the smell i think.
And yes, a capacitor. it is on the todo to add. it says minimum 10uf (microfahrad ? ) the datasheet tells me it needs to be some special material, i have that value in ceramic, and a selection of electrolitic caps...
