Trying to setup IDE on Macbook w/ Ubuntu installed

At the moment it is difficult to work with Arduino IDE under Windows 11 on the new generation PC with USB 3.0 my Dell BIOS has no option to put the USB ports into 2.0 mode. Every time I connect Arduino I have problems with uploading the sketch, I have to restart my laptop many times during work with Arduino.
Because of it I am trying to setup the Arduino IDE on my Macbook with Ubuntu installed but it's not easy job.

Hi @DroneAvatar.

I'm not very knowledgeable on this subject, but from my experience nothing like this is necessary on non-Mac PCs. I have seen reports of a lack of support for USB 2.0 on Mac computers, but I don't remember any such reports from users of non-Mac computers and I carefully monitor the forum for posts about this type of subject matter since it is an area of special focus for me. My understanding is that USB 3.0 ports generally have backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 devices.

I don't think it qualifies as "new generation", since I bought it two years ago, but my Windows 11 computer does have reasonably modern hardware and I don't have any unexpected problems with uploading to any of the many Arduino boards I use, even though I have not changed any configuration of the USB ports from the default settings it shipped with.

So if you like, it might be productive to investigate the problems you are having with uploading from the Windows machine in case we can solve that.

Do you also have macOS installed on the Macbook?

If so, is there a specific reason you want to use Arduino IDE from Linux instead of from macOS? I don't think you will have any problems setting up Arduino IDE on macOS because many thousands of people (including myself) have done so successfully.

Just like above, I do not have problems using USB 3 ports with Arduinos. Tested uploads with an official Mega and a CH340 Nano. Computer is an Asus Vivobook with Win11 Home, approx. one month old.

Thanks for letting me know, I don't really know what is wrong with my Dell Win 11 configuration, I just read somewhere that some developers has successfully been able to upload the sketches to Arduino after they had downgraded the USB configuration in BIOS from USB 3.0 to. USB 2.0.
Unfortunately my Dell BIOS doesn't have such option.
That is why I trying to check if it will work better on the hardware which have native support for USB 2.0

No I removed completely the ElCapitan from this Macbook, because it is really old system and no longer offers the security updates.
