I need to turn on an analog audio source (line level) connected to an audio source on and off using arduino digital pin as a controller. When ON, signal is propagated to a headphone jack, When OFF no signal at headphone jack. It is only one channel, mono audio. The switching speed is critical (<1ms needed) so I can not use a relay. My thought is to use a multiplexer and use arduino to select the needed channel when ON time, and select any other channel in OFF time but given that multiplexers come in usually large number of channels they take space and large number of arduino pins to control. is there an easier approach? I do not have a negative rail in my circuit so 4066 can't work either as far as I understand. Can MOSFET work as a switch for analog signals (going in the negative voltage) or only positive ones.

You can find good analog switches those days (an example)

Look at muting circuits in audio applications. If you do some research you will find hundreds of variations, one will suit you. If you want a real answer, please post a schematic.

I was exploring the 4066 and I even have some of them on hand. As far as I understand those switches need a negative rail to output negative signals. Is this correct? Are there variations that work without negative rails?

Please post a schematic, or the thread will get silly. There is no generic solution to this requirement. Every audio circuit is different. Are you worried about switching noise, sometimes called "pop"?

Attached a basic circuit of what I want to do using a normal relay. The logic source is arduino pin HIGH or LOW. The voltemeter is on the output. [circuit]

Yes I am worried about the switching noise pop. The signal will be a pure sine wave

This is what I am using really. A sine wave signal generator and a relay connected to it. Just replace the logical source with Arduino pin 5 if that makes a difference. the relay works but the switch time is very high. I need switching time to be much lower.

What kind of generator? Some you can control directly. [image] How to get the best out of this forum Programming Questions Welcome to the Arduino forum! A guide explaining how to get the best out of this forum is available at the link below. Please read it:

Yes, I use a signal generator that I control directly externally to play the sine wave tones.
