unable to burn bootloader in arduino uno

hi everyone

I am trying to burn boot loader on my target-arduino uno board(Atmega328p-pu) via programmer-other arduino uno board(Atmega328p-pu) ,but I have got following error:-

avrdude: Yikes!  Invalid device signature.
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
         this check.

avrdude done.  Thank you.

In the error the "avrdude: Device signature = 0x000000"shown and sometimes is"avrdude: Device signature = 0x00ff00" and it changes every time.

I made the following connections between
programmer board & target board:-

  1. pin 13 pin 13
  2. pin 12 pin 12
  3. pin 11 pin 11
  4. pin 10 RESET
  5. 5V 5V
  6. GND GND

I checked the connections 2-3 times and they are connected as mentioned above.

For burning the boot loader I follow the process as described on site of arduino -
https://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/ArduinoISP(tried many times to burn boot loader on board) .

I even tried disabling the auto reset by connecting the 10uf capacitor between RESET and GND pins on programmer board (after uploading ArduinoISP sketch) but this time also I have received the same error .

Please help me with this I am trying to resolve this problem from many days but not succeeded.

Double check you have good leads.
Try the reset button on the target Uno by holding down until the upload starts.
Better yet, get a real programmer. A cheap USBasp or ATtinyISP would work so much better than an Arduino as ISP.

I have had more trouble getting an Arduino as ISP to work than it is worth. One time will work like a champ and the next time I will have to spend 20 minutes getting it to work again.

Thank u Kprims, I have the usbasp but its firmware is not updated which is why it can not detected by averdude.

Is there any chance of error due fuse bits?

Is this the error you get when using the USBasp?

avrdude: auto set sck period (because given equals null)
avrdude: warning: cannot set sck period. please check for usbasp firmware update.

This is just a warning and you should still be able to use the USBasp for burning the bootloader.

When you burn the bootloader it will also set the fuses for the board/chip you select.

If you are having trouble getting the USBasp to work on Windows, this thread may help.

"I was using libusb-win32 v1.2.4.0. Using libusb-win32 turns out to be the problem. Once I updated the driver to libusbK v3.0.7.0 the problem was solved, thanks DrAzzy! Here's how I did it:

Plug in USBasp
Download Zadig from http://zadig.akeo.ie
Start zadig
Options > List all devices
Select USBasp from the drop down menu
Select libusbK(v3.0.7.0) driver
Click Install"
