Usb interface chip in arduino heating up while connecting to usb

That is a bad sign, suggesting that the interface chip is damaged. You should not plug it into the USB port, as that may damage your computer.

The board itself may be trashed, although the ATmega328P chip might still be usable on a breadboard, like this.

Welcome! Any idea of what might have caused this? Have you used it connected to another power source in anyway? Can you power it via the +5 without it getting hot?
