Weight Sensor

I have been slowly learning how arduinos work but I am looking to create a quick prototype of a weight sensor that would be able to send push notifications through an application based on certain weights.
I haven't been able to find any similar tutorials yet and was hoping to tap into the wealth of knowledge here for some direction.

Dave - I am not sure about which sensor I am going to be using but I am looking to measure how much sand is in a bucket at any given time. So pounds, but nothing more than 5.
