Do you have a Tools > Board > LOLIN (WEMOS) D1 R2 and Mini menu option?
Negative...all boards are selectables are Arduino, Adafruit and Linino...
and I do not at all recognize the look of these selectrion, there used
to be a lot more..

install the esp8266 boards package in IDE boards manager
Well, OK, but I'd first like to know what's happened before I change anything... I have been
working with th Wemos boar for half a year already and had no difficulty selecting it with the
board selection tool.
And this tool now looks quite different from before... what can have happened ?

the boards package are installed in Arduino15 folder. It is the folder where the preferences file is located too so if you go to Preferences there is the path shown. did you delete folders in your home folder or logged in as a different user?
Thanks for that indication ... seems as if the preferences.txt has somehow disappeared ... will check this
further... I tried an older computer and there I had no difficulty finding all the usual boards as well as the
Wemos boards
OK, found the preferences.txt in both computers, the new one with problems and the old one that
performs correctly. As said before the boards manager presents different information , but in the
preferences.txt I see no list of boards ( which is probably normal) but neither an indication where
to find the list of boards accepted. Both have this information included : Additional boards manager :http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json (2.5.0)

Please explain what you mean by "the list of boards accepted".

Well, the list shown by the tools manager ....that list used to show Arduino/Genuino Zero at the top
and Windowss 10 IoT Core at the bottom. It now shows onle Arduino Yun at the top and Arduino Uno WiFi
at the bottom
Now I have found a solution ( and probable cause ) to the problem !!
I realised that what had changed since before summer when all worked fine , was the installation of the last version of the IDE (version 1.8.10) so when I installed the previous version in my possession ( 1.8.8 )
it all worked fine again !!
Somehow there had been a complete rearrangement of the tools manager in the last version , reason of which I do not understand , but anyway , I am quite satisfied now , otherwise I' d had had to scrap a lot
of projects and start from zero again...

Why? What has the correct board not being found have to do with projects you made :
