Wemos D1 Mini Pro usb?

Hi,
Ive built a circuit which is designed to open/close a Chicken door using the following:
12V motor
L298N bridge
Wemos D1 mini pro
2 reed switches

See the attached Schematic...
Although it shows a 9V battery in fact its a 12V 2Amp supply from the mains.

The issue I have is the following:

  1. If I have the USB cable plugged in to the Wemos and the other end into the Laptop.. everything works as it should.
  2. But if I take the USB cable out it doesnt. Seems that the motor turns a couple of turns and then just stops!
  3. I tried putting the USB cable from the Wemos into the main (like a phone charger) and the same thing happens as in (2)

Any ideas for whats causing this?

The Serial.begin() statement should be at the beginning of setup() and certainly before the first Serial.print() command.
