WifiNiNA Firmware update

I finally managed to update the WiFiNina via IDE.

I'm very glad to hear it! Thanks for taking the time to post an update.

Where can I find the instructions to upgrade the WiFiNINA firmware ? I am using Arduino Ide 1.8.15 on Ubuntu with Nano RP2040 Connect modules. Running the firmware sketch says:

Firmware version installed: 1.4.5
Latest firmware version available: 1.4.7

Check result: NOT PASSED

  • The firmware version on the module does not match the
version required by the library, you may experience
    issues or failures.

Found it in the WiFiNINA doc, so will give it a try

Hi @Dave_Tbar.

I'm trying to update the Firmware on a MKR Vidor 4000.

The Check Firmware Version program is reporting "Communication with WiFi module failed!"

I'm only seeing NINA firmware (1.0.0) and NINA firmware (1.1.0) options in dropdown list of the Update Firmware option in the latest Arduino SDE (1.8.15).

The latest version of the Firmware appears to be 1.4.8 (Releases · arduino/nina-fw · GitHub ) and it has 3 BIN files in the Git Repo. Will copying those files into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Arduino\tools\WiFi101\tool\firmwares\NINA\1.1.0 folder do the trick?

@Dave_Tbar When you say rename the files? There is only one existing file (NINA_W102.bin) in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Arduino\tools\WiFi101\tool\firmwares\NINA\1.1.0 folder. So what to do there with the 3 BIN files?

Surely the SDE should pickup on all the folders in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Arduino\tools\WiFi101\tool\firmwares\NINA folder?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

@itspaul as I just explained in your other topic, the situation is different for the MKR Vidor 4000 than it is for the boards discussed in this thread:

You are free to do as you wish with your MKR Vidor 4000, but just be aware that the versions of the NINA firmware discussed here were never intended to be used on that board.

@itspaul It's been a long time since I did this and it's all a faded memory now, but you probably only need one of those files, the one simply labeled .bin perhaps. You could try different ones, but as mentioned above by @pert you should be careful to keep your original file as these firmware files may not be suitable for the Vidor 4000. I have long since given up on the MKR WiFi 1010 as the Nina firmware has a bug in it that won't allow it to connect to my Google Wifi Mesh network. I know this to be true because I now use WeMos D1 Mini devices instead and they use the ESP8266 chip and have no problem connecting to my network, nor do any other devices I have. So it's definitely a NinaWiFi bug.

I posted an update in the other thread after I got curious and tried the latest 1.4.8 version of the firmware on my Vidor. I found that the WiFiNINA library's WiFi.status() returns WL_NO_MODULE when I use that firmware version.

Thanks Dave, that worked for me!

Is there any news about future updates of this firmware? We have more than 10 pcs of MKR1010 at our company and we were using them with MRK ETH boards corded for a certain task flawlessly.

Later we tried to utilize the built in wifi module of the MKR1010 for a new project but the whole experience was really awful. We have full coverage of WiFi at out facility with ~20 brand new Ubiquiti UniFi APs but the module won't connect to the network, or if in a rare case would connect it would not keep the connection alive for long. I think we have a similar problem like Dave_Tbar has, this fw has big problems handling the case when the same SSID is broadcasted from multiple APs.

I tried multiple different fw versions, unfortunately none of them worked as intented. Any idea for the problem?

I recommend you to watch the repository of the firmware source code to get updates about the ongoing development work.

I see that you have also posted a bug report there:

To make the information convenient to anyone who might be interested in the subject, I'll post a link to the thread in question:

As I mentioned earlier, I know this is a bug in the WiFiNINA firmware because I've now programmed numerous WeMos devices, which use the ESP8266 chip, and I have put them all on my mesh network, and they can all connect without any problems. This bug has been around for a long time and there has been no effort to fix it, so I would suggest abandoning the MKR1010 and using a different MCU.

Unfortunately the implemetation is way beyond my capability, but someone from the Arduino dev guys should implement the possiblity to connect to AP by BSSID.

Based of the thread below the ESP32 on board of MKR1010 itself is capable to do it:

Hello,
Where may I get the documentation of Wifi Nina firmware? I mean the AT commands supported by it.
