I am building an Arduino controlled model train. A local electronics store sold me an xc-4426 and xc-4427 infrared transmitter receiver to detect the presence of a model train. The transmitter on one side of the track and the receiver on the other side. when a train passes the continuous IR signal is broken. Are these units suitable for this?
Quite suitable but for two things.
- Grossly cumbersome for fitting to a model railway scene.
- Unbelievably expensive.
Here is the IR LED:

Ten for $1.10, free postage in three weeks from China.
Here is the IR receiver:

$2.29 for five, same general deal as above.
These by themselves can be fitted into scenery items - and there are smaller versions, especially of the IR LED.
