millions of schematics = highest frequency 40 MHz, then problems start, the crystal does not oscillate.

That is correct! Look for a circuit that will give you an odd overtone of the fundamental crystal frequency. Pick the crystal that will give your final frequency divided by 3 or 6 or 9, etc. They will have to be cut/made so they will oscillate on the overtone, so a regular cut crystal will not work.

Ok, that is a fundamental frequency for that device. Beware the 100 microwatt-200 microwatt limits on drive of the crystal.

Why is a crystal needed? With one transistor you can build a 100MHz oscillator...
Not suitable for time keeping though...

In our country that is illegal. But it used to be great fun...

In the US, you can build any electronic device you want. If it causes interference to a licensed user of the commercial FM band, that is a different story. Are you also going to build a FM receiver for that frequency?

You don't necessarily start with a 100MHz, crystal.
The technology uses frequency doublers and triplers, to get 100MHz carrier.
