3.5mm headphone as button or switch

hi im somewhat new im trying to use the left audio and ground wire from a phone to act as an input to a arduino mini/micro (atmega328p) im not trying to read the audio or process it, im having some issues as i know that headphone jacks give ac and negative voltage, i just want to use it as an input as if it was a momentary button

If the headphone cable is plugged into the phone I don't understand how it could carry an on/off signal?

Can you explain the project you are trying to implement?

3.5mm jacks have an extra pin that detects a plug being inserted. A lot of 3.5mm female ends made for PCB will be clear and you can get a good look at how they work. Just google some up and look for 5 pin varieties.

If the OP is using a jack-socket connected to his Arduino the "the left audio and ground wire from a phone" will not be coming from a phone.

(By the way I am not saying your interpretation of what is really required is wrong! )

If the OP can explain what they have, and what they. are trying to do - we may be able to help.
