Changing names of COM ports

Thank for your post, It helped me a lot and answered many of my questions. I want to change the description name of the 2 COM ports like this: RS485 Module (COM 3). Is there a way to do that? Looking forward to your reply.

Yes. If you mean the descriptive name shown before (COM3), rather than the COM port number itself, that can be changed in Windows.

You can change this by editing the Windows Registry. But make a backup before you change anything!

Look for something like this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
└─ SYSTEM
   └─ CurrentControlSet
      └─ Enum
         └─ USB
            └─ VID_xxxx&PID_xxxx
               └─ <serial number>

It's called the Friendly Name.
Unless you are an experienced windows user, I highly recommend not messing with the Registry.
