MAX30102 5v interface?

So according to the following site, i can directly connect the MAX30102 to a 5v arduino:

So, my question is: is this correct, or do I need a voltage divider? The module is set to 3.3v.

Note: either way the final project will use a 3.3v arduino pro mini, but I'm wondering if I can use my arduino nano for testing, as it has a direct USB interface.

Because that was most likely as clear as mud, this is my basic question:

Is it safe to connect a 3.3v i2c "slave" device to a 5v "master" device? (Specifically the MAX30102)

Note: Even though it may or may not matter, the module is the black one. If needed I can send a part link
