You have to make a hardware mod for the ESP32 Uno-format boards from Ebay.

The Uno-format boards have the ESP32 pins printed on the pcb.
Make the harware mod.
Plug the display shield into the Uno-style header sockets.
Every male pin should mate with a female socket as Nature intended.

Buy a board like this uno-format board
Install the MCUFRIEND_kbv library with the Library Manager.
Make the hardware mods as described.
Plug the Shield into the board header sockets.
You do not have to use MCUFRIEND_kbv library.
Bodmer has a TFT_eSPI library that can be configured for Mcufriend parallel shields.
It requires the same hardware mods as the MCUFRIEND_kbv library.
