Motion sensor like in an optical mouse

Hi!

I am pretty new to arduino, so i do not have much experience.

I would like to make a ring, which is in connection with the arduino. In the middle of the ring, there will be a wire cable, which will move up and down. The ring will be in a stable position, so it won't move, only the cable.

What i would like to achieve is to get the coordinates of the movement.

My idea is to use a sensor which can be found in optical mouses. How can i find these kind of sensors? It would be great if i could buy it without the mouse.

I have tried to search it for a couple of hours, but i didn't found anything useful.

Thanks for any help!

Only a couple of hours? Have you tried to connect your Arduino to the sensor in an optical mouse?

Please explain the ring. What has that to do with anything you wrote about?

Why no connect something to what ever is moving the cable?

Take an old mouse apart to get the sensor. Plenty of material on line about how they work.

Judging from the images the OP already opened up an optical mouse.

Do tell more about the project. What is it? What resolution do you need? What are the dimensions of that ring and the wire inside it? What moves it? Etc.
