Newby looking to choose the correct Arduino and accessory components

  • There are different NANO form factors out there.
Confirm you are using the proper silk screen pin labels on your particular PCB.

You need a relay, as others have said before the conversation derailed.
AFAIK, there aren't any "convenient" Arduino-compatible boards with any built-in relays (relays are big, and it would tend to make the board "large.")

Nor do I see mini "relay shields" for an Arduino Nano (which is otherwise a fine choice for this application.) (which is ... a bit strange. Although a lot of relay add-ons for Arduinos seem to aim at higher-current applications, whereas you just need a switch closure.) It would be easy enough to wire up the circuit from #4 with a small 5V relay, or you could use an Adafruit feather with their relay featherwing if you want a nice neat package.

(You could also presumably wire the featherwing to an ordinary nano; only slightly more difficult.)

(General "newby" advise is to get an ATmega328p Arduino Uno R3 or compatible. Almost all of the examples and tutorials created over the last 15+ years are likely to be done with that hardware. A 328p-based Nano is a good second choice (same CPU and software, different physical layout.) Avoid the "Uno R4" boards (a bit sadly.))

Thank you for this additional information

Yes, we want to use a motion sensor to initiate the relay closure. I have the correct PIR motion sensor and 5 volt relay module. I selected a Nano RP2040 with the appropriate screw terminal board for the project. Currently I am having trouble with the coding, as we wanted to have a minimum 30 second delay between opportunities for the relay to close. At any rate, I guess I’ll put together a new post since I am pulling my hair out trying to make this work.
