Oil Pressure Switch/Sending Unit

Hello everyone, I need some help with a project. I will be using a circuit to drive a automotive gauge stepper motor using an analog sensor to provide pressure input.

I am starting with and arduino to mock up everything. For the life of me I cannot figure out how my ford Mustang oil pressure sending unit works.

This particular unit has 3 pins. Pins 1,2 and 3 are labeled "oil pressure switch", "signal return" and "Vref". I am assuming Vref is 5V and pin 1 is ground and pin 2 is signal 0.5-4.5V.

When I check continuity between the threaded portion and pin 1, I see no continuity without pressure and no continuity with pressure (slowly ramping from 0-80 psi).

When I hook the sensor up to a 5V source with Pin 1 set to ground and read pin 2 I see 0.5V constantly no matter what pressure is applied to the sensor.

Please help!

Hi,

What year mustang??

Many recent automotive sensors send digital data not analog voltages..

You need to do more research on that particular vehicle. Looking at specs on replacement sensors may help..

It's a 2016, but I'm almost certain the sensor is analog. It's a bosch unit and unfortunately when I go to their website there is no literature for the particular part number I have.

I'll see what I can find wrt it being a digital sensor.
