Problem with installing arduino uno

Dear all,

I can't get my arduino uno to work. When i plug it into windows it does not make the sound and when i look in device manager there is no change. I have tried it with windows 8.1,7, xp and ubuntu and have also changed 2 cables. I followed the instructions thoroughly, and also have tried the enhanced version of the ide. On ubuntu, the com1 port is greyed and nothing that other forums showed worked. The board is brand new out of the box and when I power it up, there is a led that blinks.

Thank you

I had the same problem for Arduino UNO and Windows 8.1. A friend, named, Carlos Quinonez, here in ITESM, Juarez,Mexico, solved the problem in the following way:
Select CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM AND SECURITY>SYSTEM>DEVICE MANAGER then look for UPDATE DRIVER SOFTWARE then look for DRIVERS Folder in ARDUINO Folder click NEXT and the PORT get installed.
Finally in ARDUINO IDE choose: TOOLS>PORT>COM4(Arduino UNO). And that's all.

As I said in the original post, when I plug in the board, there is no change in device manager. That means that no question mark device appears in other devices or Ports(COM&LPT) or any other category. So where should i click on update driver software?

Try this: DEVICE MANAGER>View>Show hidden services; then click PORTS, it must appear Arduino UNO (COM4) right click here, then Update Driver Software>Search automatically for updated driver software.
Note: The COM4 port works when the USB cable connects to the Arduino Board.

no change. I've added a picture of the dev manager
