Proposal: Rename "Arduino IDE 2.0" category to "IDE 2.x"

This is one of the incremental changes implementing the English language category restructuring discussed in general at:

The specific changes being proposed can be seen here. They consist of:

  • Change the category's name from "Arduino IDE 2.0" to "IDE 2.x"
  • Change category "slug" (cosmetic text in category page URL) to ide-2x

A long term existence was not given consideration at the time of the naming of the "Arduino IDE 2.0" category. The name has already been made outdated by the release of Arduino IDE 2.1.0.

The new name follows the established convention of dropping the "Arduino" of the software (and hardware) product name from the category name where that is implicit (e.g., "Web Editor", "IoT Cloud", "PLC IDE").

Impact on Links

The name change will not break any links.

Links to Category and Subcategory Pages

Although the forum software adds a cosmetic text "slug" to the category page URL, the only technically significant part of the URL is the ID (e.g., 93). Even though the "slug" text will be changed as part of the renaming, the previous links will still lead to the category page as always.

Links to Topics and Posts

Topic and post URLs are not category dependent so there is no impact on links to any topics or posts under the renamed category.

Do you mean change it to "Arduino IDE 2.x" or just "IDE 2.x"

My preference would be for the former

Yes:

I think that the convention of dropping Arduino from the category names where it is appropriate is a shame as it makes sense to me to be specific, especially when we may want to differentiate between questions about Arduino products and other similar products

I think it is a reasonable perspective, but I also think the established convention makes sense. You could tack "Arduino" on every single category name (e.g., "Arduino Website and Arduino Forum"). This is the Arduino forum so I don't think it is generally necessary to specify "Arduino" in cases like this where brevity is beneficial. The exception would be something like "Arduino SIM", where the name "SIM" alone would be pretty ambiguous.

Keep in mind that we can be more explicit about the purpose and scope of the categories in their description, which is typically displayed along with the category name in the forum UI.

Older versions are often not supported, but there are still some users with Arduino IDE 1.X. What should they do if they have questions about the Arduino IDE? Or should they simply be referred to Arduino IDE 2.X?
You mentioned renaming another category to IDE 1.X.. But installation and troubleshooting has to do with both IDE 2.X and IDE 1.X, right?

@cloudDev

Please see the restructuring topic; there will be IDE 1.x and IDE 2.x categories.

I guess I need to get more information....
:grimacing:

1.x and 2.x are both acceptable as they cover a range.
After all the iterations of 1.x.x and the likely same for 2.x.x I don't have any issues.

@sterretje what is your opinion regarding the category name?:

Development Tools > IDE 2.x

OR

Development Tools > Arduino IDE 2.x

In your proposal for the overall category structure, you used Development Tools > Arduino IDE 2.0, but I saw you used Development Tools > IDE 2.x in the demo on the "staging site" forum:

So I went with IDE 2.x here.

I'm happy with IDE 2.x. My proposal was based on the existing categories at that time.

Although the current category name is very ambiguous, #using-arduino:installation-troubleshooting is exclusively for discussions related to Arduino IDE 1.x. The bulk of the topics in that category were already from Arduino IDE 1.x users simply because they were created during the time when that was the only IDE version series. Since the creation of the #software:arduino-ide-2-0 category, the forum maintainers have made a very strong effort to move all Arduino IDE 2.x-related topics that were created in #using-arduino:installation-troubleshooting.

So the name change proposed in Proposal: Rename "Installation & Troubleshooting" category to "IDE 1.x" only communicates the already established scope of the category to the users.

I did not know that!
But go ahead, I'm sure you're doing the right and best!

A post was split to a new topic: Adding tabs in IDE 2

The category has now been renamed.

With this change in place, I feel that it's also time to move this category to the "Using Arduino" section.
