Warning to all forum members: rules have changed

The forum rules have changed and it is now considered acceptable to post in any language in the forum sections that were previously considered english-only.

If you move such a post to another part of the forum, this will be considered inappropriate and will be removed.

Did your link get munged in translation or have I not had enough coffee this morning and I'm missing a joke? Because it just takes me to the 404 Oops! That page doesn’t exist or is private. page.

Possibly because that was a private message to me.

Here is the message:

Ahh, okay. Thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering if I really ought to take up drinking coffee.

Hi @PaulRB. It is true that your post was flagged by a forum member. However, your conclusion from the result of that flag is incorrect.

The reason for the flag was not your recategorization of the topic. The reason for the flag was that your post notifying the user of the recategorization was written in English, and thus contrary to the practices of the Français category.

Your recategorization of the topic was absolutely correct and very helpful. Thanks so much to you and to all the other forum members who help with the Sisyphean task of maintaining the correct categorization of the forum.

It is also helpful to make a post to notify the user of the recategorization, as hopefully this will make them aware that their choice of category was inappropriate and they should be more careful in the future.

It is questionable whether it is appropriate to write such a post in English though when moving a topic to a non-English category. I think it would be better to compose the post in English and then run it through a machine translation service (e.g., Google Translate) before posting the translated text. Or if you like, you can use the precomposed "template" text that is used by the moderators:

In the case of moving a topic from an English language category to Français :

https://github.com/arduino/forum-assets/blob/main/content/categories/templates/_topics/moved-to-french-section/1.md

However, there are no hard feelings or impact on your forum account from this flag. A forum member simply notified the moderators of something they thought was problematic and I took what I felt to be the best action to resolve the situation. I apologize if this caused any confusion or frustration.

As a caffeine addict for several decades, I guess I shouldn't encourage you in that respect!

Ok, I get it. At the moment I posted that, I was replying in English in an English form section. But then I moved the topic to a French section and broke the rules by not posting in French in a French section.

So it is not true that posting in French in an English section, or vice versa, is now acceptable. I am sorry for incorrectly assuming that.

I'm not so good with languages other than English. There are 7000+ languages currently in use in the world and, to my shame, I only speak one of them. Ok, I can order breakfast or a couple of beers in French, Italian or Spanish but that's about it.

In future, when I have time to attempt to translate my posts into the language of the forum section I intend moving the topic to, I will gladly do that. Otherwise I will keep my nose clean.

Um... Bore Da!
