This is I'm sure a very daft question as I'm a newbie, but I've decided to start making a basic midi synth for fun, and am using this tutorial.
However there is a picture in the schematic.. the long grey thing on the right, and I have no idea what it's meant to be! Any help? The image is attached here again.. thanks so much!
Potentiometer; the slider type instead of the rotating type.

Slide Potentiometer - works the same way as the rotary kind, only you slide the thing back and forth instead of rotating a knob. slide potentiometer for sale | eBay
Generally significantly more expensive than rotary ones (bulkier too), and more liable to get damaged by dirt and crap getting into the slit in the top - but can be very satisfying in a tactile sense, and gives very intuitive visual feedback about what it's currently set to.
