Arduino Giga R1: How to unsolder the three pins Off, Ground, and RTC clock battery pins

Has anyone attempted to use the three soldered pins for Off, Ground and RTC Clock Battery? None of these pins have headers on them. They are soldered closed.

Add fresh solder and use a desoldering pump. Or add more solder to bridge the 3 holes and put your pin header while the solder is melted then remove the bridges.

The pins need to be separate. Was thinking about solder three wires to the three solder joints. I don't understand why Arduino didn't put headers on these pins.

Can you make a picture?
It might help if we see what you see.
There are dozens of different arduino boards... (and clones thereof).

What exact module? Post a picture or a link to where you got it.

If the pad is a certain size, just strip off a bit of insulation from a small gauge wire, make a tiny loop in the bared end, fill it with solder and then place the loop on the pad and reheat.

If you don't have fine gauge wire, just tin the straight bare end.

In both cases look out for making short circuits.

Arduino Giga R1 module. I was going to see if I could re-pad it.

Do you mean this one withe pads labeled OFF, GND, and VRTC?

Yes.

And why is it you don't want to put a header there? You could solder wires if that was more convenient for you. If you need to remove some solder from the holes you could follow the suggestions in post #2.

I tried to put a 3 pin header.

PE - I was looking at youtube and didn't see anything demonstrating clearing a through hole with desoldering wick (braid). It's a simple proposition, place the wick over the hole and press down on that with the hot soldering iron tip till the solder wicks up the braid. (Is that capillary action ?) It's not "intuitive", but adding some new, fresh solder, beforehand, can help.

  • If you have some soldering skills you can remove any plastic header pieces then remove the pins one at a time.
You can use some sharp nippy flush cutters to aid in this.

OR

  • Make a version of this but that’s a lot of hand work for 3 pins

This may be helpful. Solder sucker needed. You do have one, don't you?

I have a solder sucker and solder wick. I will probably replace them. I am ready to get a better solder station.

LarryD, thanks for the pictures and ideas.

I haven't soldered in many years. I wonder if my solder iron needs replacing.

  • Invest in soldering flux paste and a flux pen, always use it.

Well, if it gets hot then it's good enough to desolder with.
And probably enough to get 3 header pins in.
You know best.

[Or send it to me with $5 and return postage. If you want a header or pins placed - that's another $5.]
