Map real-time tweets to large LED matrix

For my first Arduino project, I think I'm being very ambitious.

I want to have a very large (think 2 metres wide, 1 metre high), fairly high-resolution LED matrix underneath a translucent perspex sheet. The sheet will have drawn on it outlines of a map of the world, and I want to map latitudes and longitudes from real-time tweets to LEDs on the map and have them light up.

Is this possible?

Any guidance on first steps and equipment needed would be very much appreciated!
